Different Types of Teeth Whitening Systems

At Elite Dental Associates, we’re passionate on teeth whitening education. Our patients constantly ask us what we can do to help them get the perfect smile, but there are so many ways to make it happen. We will be writing a series on teeth whitening to help our patients learn what their options for teeth whitening are, what to avoid, risks, how to stay safe when whitening your teeth, and more. In part one, we’ll discuss the different types of teeth whitening systems.

There are many ways that you can go about getting the perfect pearly whites. Of all the different types of teeth whitening systems, which ones are most effective? Which ones are cost-effective? We’ll help you filter through these systems to find one or more that you can begin to implement into your oral routine.

Most commonly, you’ll see people using one of these three for at-home teeth whitening:

  • Whitening Toothpastes
  • Over-the-Counter Whitening Strips or Gels
  • Mouth Rinses with Whitening Power

Though these are the easiest to obtain, the results can typically take up to 12 weeks to see a result, must be maintained on a daily or weekly basis, or just simply don’t do the trick at lightening many shades. Of the different types of teeth whitening systems, these are best for those looking for a subtle result that doesn’t take a lot of time, and is relatively inexpensive.

The “middle child” of teeth whitening systems is the tray-based system. Either done at home or with a visit to the dentist, you get a tray that is filled with solution and is worn for a couple hours a day to produce results. This is a good choice for patients that don’t want to visit the dentist for more intensive procedures.

For the most effective yet expensive results, patients can visit their dentist for an in-office whitening treatment. This includes having a product applied to the tooth and combined with the power of light, heat, or laser. You get results in a single treatment, but can be done multiple times for more results. This is perfect for an upcoming even that you want to look your best for on a time crunch.
