If you are in need of tooth restoration, or if you are unhappy with the way your smile looks, your first inclination may be to head to a cosmetic dentist. While this may be a good idea, it may not be the best idea. There are many types of dentists, but it may be wiser to head to a prosthodontic dentist that has had extra training to deal with cases at a more advanced level.
Many patients have never heard of a prosthodontic dentist. However, prosthodontists (or specialized restorative dentists) are highly regarded by the American Dental Association (ADA). In fact, prosthodontics is one of only nine sub-specialties of dentistry that are recognized by the ADA (cosmetic dentistry is not one of the nine specialties). This means that dental schools instruct dentists in techniques, methods, and specialized training in prosthodontics—dental schools do not instruct dentists in cosmetic dentistry.
Many patients come to [Dr. Chang] with many questions including special considerations for dental veneers. The following are just a list of the most frequently asked questions:
Q. Cost varies from dentist to dentist… is that a huge factor or is it all the same? Do all dentists use the same material but charge differently?
A. Cost of dental care has always been a question. Like anything, you pay for what you get. Too many patients assume that the cost has no factor in the dental prosthesis that they receive…. Which is false. Less expensive dentistry utilizes laboratory that are more focused on mass production, less expensive material and much less individualized focus on your case. Your case just becomes a “number” in their system and not an individualized case.
Cosmetic dentistry that may cost a bit more, though, provides a more customized, individualized ceramist and a technician that provides the best dental prosthesis possible. Dental materials & ceramics utilized are all of the best quality and come with a “warranty” which most mass production labs do not provide. Your case is individually fabricated by one master technician and not multiple, less experienced technician. Providing a superb prosthesis that will maintain its color and long-term longevity.
Again, like any industry, you pay for what you get. Do you ever expect to get first class service if you buy a coach plane ticket? No. The same applies to dentistry. Cheaper is NOT always better. Consider cosmetic dentistry or any other type of dentistry a long-term investment. Better product just last longer and hold their value.
